Allentown is a borough located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. Allentown is the county seat of Lehigh County. The population was 73,959 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality by population in Pennsylvania (behind Philadelphia), and the fifth-largest in the state (after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Reading).
History & Etymology
Allentown was originally named “New London” in 1727 but was renamed “Allentown” in 1838. The name comes from the Lenape word Alapincketown meaning “place where there are many pine trees”.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 19.8 square miles (50.7 km²), of which, 19.4 square miles (49.6 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (0.9 km²) of it (2.03%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 68,073 people, 25,543 households, and 17,814 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,096.0 people per square mile (1,585.7/km²). There were 25,981 housing units at an average density of 1,554.0 per square mile (599.1/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 90.35% White, 3.71% African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.32% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.28% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.16% of the population.
