Austin Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the capital of the state’s 12th congressional district and is also the county seat of Travis County. Austin is known as “the Live Music Capital of the World” and is often referred to as the “Live Music Capital of the Universe”. The city is named after Stephen F. Austin, who was a Mexican general and colonizer of what is now Texas. Austin is the second fastest-growing major metropolitan area in the country, behind San Jose, California. History & Etymology
In 1839, Stephen F. Austin arrived in the area that would become Austin with his family. He purchased land and established the first permanent European settlement in present-day Texas. This settlement became the City of Austin in 1841. In 1845, the Republic of Texas was formed and Austin was designated as its capital. In 1849, Austin became the capital of the new State of Texas. In 1859, the State Legislature moved the capital to Houston. In 1873, the State Legislature returned Austin to its original status as the capital. Austin was incorporated as a city in 1876.

As of 2012, there were 727,837 residents living in the city limits. Of those, 60% lived in the central business district (CBD), 20% lived in East Austin, 13% lived in West Austin, and 6% lived in North Austin. As of 2010, the city had an estimated population of 787,000. Based on projections, the city will have approximately 925,000 residents by 2030.
The city is located in Central Texas along the Colorado River. The city is bordered by Lake Travis to the north, Burnet County to the east, Hays County to the south, and Williamson County to the west. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has an area of 2.4 square miles.
